Why now?
Kari’s Law & Ray Baum’s act are two new laws that were introduced in 2020. The final deadline for compliance was Jan. 6th of 2022, but you can still make the necessary changes to be compliant.
As of February 16, 2020 - Kari’s Law is in effect and
requires the following on all new / upgraded systems:
- Direct access to 9-1-1 without an access code.
- Routing to the 9-1-1 PSAP (public safety answer point) with no interception.
- On-site notification to staff of who dialed 9-1-1.

FAQs
What exactly are MLTS?
Multi-Line Telephone System is a phone system that can handle two or more phone calls at the same time. It lets employees put calls on hold, dial internal or external numbers, then go back to the initial line. It’s pretty handy in the work environment, almost necessary.
Does Kari’s Law apply to all MLTS or are some MLTS grandfathered?
Kari’s Law applies to all MLTS in the U.S. that were manufactured, imported, offered for sale or lease, first sold or leased, or installed on or after February 17, 2020. It does not cover existing MLTS that were installed prior to February 17, 2020. However, in some states, existing MLTS that are not covered by the federal version of Kari’s Law may be covered by state versions of Kari’s Law that were enacted prior to the federal law.
What Happens if I just ignore these new laws? Or fail to meet the compliance deadline?
The FCC will closely monitor any complaints about alleged violations of these new 9-1-1 laws. You can guess what happens then: large sums of money in fines is the least of your problems. If an incident occurred, and it reached court your company will be dragged through the court system, not only paying fines and expenses but also taking critical hits to your reputation, some of which may never be remedied.
